The Power of Castor Oil Packs

One of my favorites is the castor oil pack.

A Brief History

Castor oil, extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, has been used therapeutically for thousands of years — from Ancient Egypt to Ayurveda to modern naturopathic medicine. Castor oil is known for its ability to stimulate circulation, support detoxification, and ease abdominal discomfort, and it remains a powerful tool for encouraging digestive balance.

What You’ll Need for Your Castor Oil Pack

Creating your own castor oil pack is simple and can be a great part of your soothing bedtime rituals. There are different ways you can make your pack. Today I’ll guide you in the fastest, easiest way to get your castor oil pack-a-day habit going. 

You’ll need:

  • An castor oil pack made of organic flannel (*Note: You’ll see cheaper versions of castor oil packs, but they’re likely constructed of chemically-treated fabric.)
  • Organic, cold-pressed castor oil
  • A sleep top you don’t mind getting irreparably oily

How to make your castor oil pack

  1. Saturate the fabric of your castor oil pack with castor oil. You want the fabric to be moist but not dripping. Each night, add roughly one more tablespoon of castor oil to the fabric.
  2. Place your pack over your abdomen, just below the ribcage and slightly favoring the right side where your beloved liver resides.
  3. Secure the pack using the velcro straps if you’d like OR choose a top that is tight enough to keep your pack in place.
  4. Put on your soon-to-be slightly oily sleep top.
  5. Relax laying on your back for 30-45 minutes. Alternatively, you can just go to sleep wrapped in your castor oil pack.
  6. When finished, remove the pack and store it in a sealed glass container (ideal) or sturdy zip lock bag for reuse.

How Often Do I Need to Use My Pack?

Simple answer: 

  • Daily for 60 days to start. Then reduce to 3-4 consecutive days/week. 

 

Used consistently castor oil packs can help stimulate gentle peristalsis (fancy word for contraction of your digestive tract), reduce bloating, and calm abdominal tension by increasing circulation and lymphatic flow.

While I understand it can take something to integrate one more thing into your bedtime ritual, to get the real benefits of a castor oil pack, I recommend committing to using this daily for 60 days. At this point, you can reduce the frequency to 3-4 days per week (ideally consecutive) and refine as you see fit for your body’s needs. 

 

Who Should Avoid Castor Oil Packs

Although generally safe, castor oil packs are not for everyone. Avoid use if you are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Recovering from recent abdominal surgery
  • Managing active skin irritation or infection near the area of application
