Root-Cause Testing

Functional Medicine Lab Testing

Functional medicine laboratory testing helps identify underlying imbalances that may be playing an important role in symptoms such as fatigue, digestive issues, hormone imbalance, weight resistance, brain fog, autoimmune conditions, skin concerns, and more. While conventional testing plays an important role, it often leaves important questions unanswered and symptoms unresolved.

Whether we’re seeking to better understand your microbiome, your hormones, your metabolism, your detox pathways or determine if there is an undetected food sensitivity at play, functional medicine testing helps us piece together the puzzle of your health and map out a clear and effective plan for healing.

The goal isn’t to collect more data. The goal is to gather actionable information and uncover meaningful patterns that allow for a targeted healing path and – ultimately – resolution of your symptoms and health conundrums.

Functional Medicine Tests We Commonly Use

We don’t run every test on every patient or client. Testing is selected based on your symptoms, history, goals, and existing laboratory data. Our goal is to answer meaningful clinical questions, inform recommendations, and understand the factors contributing to your symptoms such that healing and resolution is available.

DUTCH Complete Hormone and Cortisol Test

Maps cortisol rhythm, free cortisol and cortisone, sex hormones, and how your body uniquely metabolizes sex hormones. One of the most comprehensive hormone assessments available. We commonly recommend this test when someone is experiencing menstrual cycle irregularities, PMS and PMDD, acne, fertility challenges, perimenopause, menopause, low libido, fatigue, insomnia, and unexplained weight loss resistance.

Comprehensive Stool and Microbiome Testing: GI360 or GI Effects

The health of the gut influences far more than digestion. The gut microbiome interacts with immune function, hormone metabolism, inflammation, nutrient absorption, skin health, mood, and metabolic health. When we suspect the microbiome is playing a role in your symptoms, we often turn to comprehensive stool testing to gather deeper insight. Unlike many single-sample tests, these 3-day collections improve our ability to detect parasites and provide a more complete picture of digestive and microbiome health. In addition to evaluating beneficial and opportunistic bacteria, yeast, parasites, and inflammation, these panels assess digestive function, absorption, pancreatic enzyme activity, short-chain fatty acid production, stool pH, and beta-glucuronidase activity. Together, these markers help us better understand how well the gut is functioning in addition to what’s living in it.

SIBO Breath Test

Bacteria should live primarily in your large intestines, but in some people they move upstream and make a home in the small intestines. A SIBO breath test measures hydrogen and methane production after you drink a test solution. The results help identify bacterial overgrowth in the small intestines that could be contributing to bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, excessive gas, or symptoms that worsen after meals.

Food Sensitivity Panels

We use advanced food sensitivity testing selectively for patients and clients dealing with complex clinical histories, eczema, autoimmunity, MCAS, or chronic symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and inflammation.

Depending on your unique case, we utilize leading-edge panels—such as Precision Point Diagnostics P88 or Cyrex testing—to evaluate multiple immune pathways. These tests offer valuable insights into your specific dietary triggers. However, we never use food sensitivity tests in isolation; they are always interpreted alongside your history, symptoms, and comprehensive lab findings to create a complete picture of your health.

Comprehensive Blood Panel

Beyond what is commonly ordered in an annual exam, we run comprehensive blood assessments. The specifics of labs ordered are customized based on your symptoms, history, and family history and may include inflammatory markers (hsCRP and homocysteine), iron studies, full thyroid (TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, antibodies), insulin resistance score and HbA1c, full lipid panel with particle size, sex hormones, and key nutrient markers.

Micronutrient Testing

When symptoms suggest nutrient insufficiency may be contributing to the picture, we may utilize advanced testing such as SpectraCell or NutrEval. These panels evaluate vitamin, mineral, antioxidant, amino acid, and other nutrient markers to help us better understand the biochemical resources available to support energy production, recovery, mood, immune function, and overall health.

Genetic Testing

Used selectively when family history, persistent symptoms, or treatment response suggest additional insight may be helpful. We may utilize advanced testing such as 3X4 Genetics to better understand how your unique genetic blueprint may influence areas such as detoxification, inflammation, hormone metabolism, nutrient needs, and resilience. Genetics help inform the plan, but they never tell the whole story.

Toxic Burden Testing

When symptoms, health history, or known exposures suggest environmental factors may be contributing to the clinical picture, we may evaluate areas such as mold exposure, heavy metals, and other environmental toxicants. These assessments are used thoughtfully and only when the findings are likely to influence clinical decision-making and treatment recommendations.

The Part That Matters Most

Anyone can order a test. The value is in reading it well.

We dig into your results before our review visit. We cross-reference panels against each other. Patterns often emerge when we connect the dots across the lab results gathered. Cortisol findings may help us better understand sleep concerns. Gut findings may offer insight into skin symptoms. Nutrient deficiencies may contribute to fatigue. We arrive at your visit having already spent time identifying foundational imbalances and patterns that explain what you’re experiencing.

Then we walk you through it. You don’t just get to see your lab results – you come to understand what they mean for you, your symptoms, and your intended health future. You leave with a customized plan designed to address the root-causes of your health challenges and launch you on your healing journey.

How We Decide What to Run

The discovery call and intake tell us where to start. A typical intake covers 50 to 70 questions across every system, your lifestyle, family history, prior testing, and current medications. From that we build a customized testing plan to uncover the source of your symptoms and health barriers.

We run tests that allow us to gather actionable information and don’t run tests that won’t change what we do for you. If a result wouldn’t move the protocol, we skip the panel.

Laboratory testing is often one important piece of a broader root-cause evaluation. The goal of testing is not to collect more data. It's to gather actionable information that helps us make better decisions, identify root causes, and create a personalized path forward. The specific tests we recommend depend on your symptoms, health history, goals, and any existing laboratory data. Because a la carte testing often leaves clients with results but no clear plan for healing, we do not offer standalone testing. Rather, we integrate laboratory findings into a holistic personalized plan designed to address what is driving your symptoms and allow for healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

We utilize CLIA-certified laboratories such as Quest Diagnostics, Genova, Doctor's Data, Precision Point Diagnostics, Cyrex, Mosaic Diagnostics, Dutch, Precision Analytical, and Spectracell. Testing is selected based on the clinical questions we're trying to answer. Some tests are commonly used in conventional medicine, while others are used more frequently within functional and integrative medicine. The goal is not to order testing for its own sake, but to gather meaningful information that helps guide clinical decision-making.

For many of these tests, you can. Most people who do end up with more questions than answers. The interpretation is the part that turns data into a plan. A well constructed plan that is acted upon allows information to be translated into outcomes. (And your health outcomes is what we are all about!)

Many standard blood tests can be run through insurance. Specialty functional medicine testing, such as DUTCH, comprehensive stool testing, and food reactivity panels, is typically an out-of-pocket expense. HSA and FSA funds may often be used for eligible services and testing. Upon request, we're also happy to provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Most specialty laboratory tests return within 2 to 4 weeks, though timing varies by panel. Once results are available, we'll schedule a dedicated review visit to discuss your findings, identify meaningful patterns, and outline personalized next steps.

Retesting is commonly advised in a selective manner. Follow-up testing is recommended when the results will help us assess progress, evaluate response to treatment, and/or guide future decisions. Not every test needs to be repeated, and we only recommend retesting when it's likely to provide meaningful clinical value.
